Yum! Brands Says It’s Committed to Being Green

Yum Brands! is committed to growing its business responsibly by reducing its environmental impact, operating its restaurants more efficiently, improving its restaurant economics and strengthening the positive reputation of its global brands.

The company is executing this environmentally-friendly vision by incorporating new technology in restaurants, such as high-efficiency heating and air conditioning systems, new LED lighting, improved hood designs and better environmental management control systems. Long-term, the brand is focused on developing LEED-certifiable restaurant standards and prototypes in five markets by 2012, as well as by reducing its global energy and water consumption 10 percent by 2015.

The company’s original LEED Gold certified restaurant was a KFC/Taco Bell in Massachusetts in 2009. Last month, KFC opened its first “certifiably green” single-brand restaurant in Indianapolis. This new KFC was designed to use 25% less energy and water than standard restaurants through the use of energy-efficient LED lighting with a 10-year life span, automated energy management and monitoring systems, reduced-care landscaping and a modified cooking oil handling system. These restaurants illustrate how the company is putting sustainability into action by focusing on water usage reduction, lighting reduction, carbon reduction and the use of building materials approved by the U.S. Green Building Council.
