Subway Goes Greener

While the Subway restaurant chain has a long history of environmentally-friendly practices, the franchise recently announced its plans for additional green efforts to enhance its positive global impact. QSRweb.com reports on the chain’s latest green policies and procedures.

Last month, approximately 75 percent of U.S. Subway restaurants switched to menu panels printed on paper substrate. This change will significantly reduce overall paper usage and allow obsolete menu panels to be recycled or composted.

Restaurants will also start using mops made of 100 percent recycled materials. These new mops are ideal for Subway since most of the cleaning supplies used in stores contain no Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs) and are non-corrosive, readily biodegradable and manufactured without phosphate and ammonia. Their cleaning program is certified by the California Air Resource Board and the EPA Safe Detergents Stewardship. All of the hand soap at Subway is Green Seal-certified.

In addition to these new green initiatives, Subway is seeing great results from their previous green efforts, including the transition to more sustainable packaging solutions that are functional and cost-effective, as well as its 10 eco-stores which are certified through a process that follows U.S. Green Building Council guidelines. Subway’s equipment is selected for maximum energy efficiency, while its transportation is optimized to improve chain efficiencies.

All of these efforts clearly exemplify Subway’s commitment to being a healthy company that cares about the health of the people and the planet.
