KFC Finds Recipe For Success With Social Media

Social networks have been finger-lickin’ good for KFC with thousands of Twitter followers and millions of Facebook “likes” for the fried chicken franchise.

Smartblogs.com recently interviewed Rick Maynard, KFC’s public relations manager, to discover how the franchise gained such a social media following and how they plan to maintain this online success.

KFC is active on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube. The company has found all of these channels to be extremely useful in connecting with consumers all over the world in a way that fits their modern lifestyles.

KFC has been using Twitter to interact with fans in an open and friendly way that’s consistent with their “Tastes So Good” brand position. The KFC Twitter feed has such a large following because it’s fun, genuine and not overly sales-focused. Fans appreciate the real, two-way communication and prefer it to simply reading packaged sales lines.

The KFC Facebook page is rapidly approaching 3 million “likes.” With restaurants in more than 100 countries, KFC’s Facebook page reflects that international audience and receives a lot of KFC-themed photos from around the world.

The company also creatively used social media to emphasize Colonel Sanders’ dedication to kids and education. A recent program presented a high school senior with a $20,000 Colonel’s scholarship based on a 140-character Twitter application. The company received nearly 3,000 tweet applications, as well as national news coverage for this worthwhile program that awards 75 $20,000 college scholarships each year.

In 2011, KFC plans to use social media to share inspiring stories about the real Colonel Sanders. This is the result of a 2010 survey commissioned by the company that revealed younger people thought the Colonel was a made-up icon rather than an actual person. KFC wants to tell the world that Colonel Sanders was an enormously successful entrepreneur and marketing genius who changed our national cuisine, despite only having a sixth-grade education. KFC hopes these stories will give followers a taste of Colonel Sanders’ many great accomplishments.
