Going Green Is Going Great For One McDonald’s Franchisee

Environmental responsibility is catching on quickly with quick-service restaurants as many franchises are eagerly incorporating green elements into their operations. QSRweb.com reports that one McDonald’s franchise owner in Riverside, California is making his golden arches green in an attempt to become the fourth franchise in the country to receive LEED certification.

The franchise is owned Tom and Candice Spiel, a couple who own and operate nine McDonald’s restaurants and have been part of the company since Tom was a manager trainee and Candace was a crew person.

"Tom and I are passionate about the environment and look for ways to incorporate green technologies in our personal and professional lives," said Candace Spiel. "We decided a few years ago to replace the previous building with a new McDonald's incorporating as many sustainability features as possible. This restaurant is more eco-friendly and serves as an educational forum for residents."

The new eco-friendly features include a light-colored hardscape to reduce heat emissions, almost 300 photovoltaic panels to generate solar energy power, native drought tolerant plants to reduce water consumption, low-flow plumbing fixtures to reduce water usage and recycled denim insulation within the building. The couple worked closely with the McDonald’s Corporation throughout the entire process.

While the Riverside restaurant is their only location designed to achieve U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold standards, they plan to make similar efforts if they remodel another unit or build one from scratch.

The Spiels want the restaurant to be a source of environmental awareness which led them to add an in-store interactive display to teach customers about their energy-efficient features. The 42-inch LCD touchscreen takes customers on a virtual, 3D tour of the restaurant and provides real-time data to show the energy output of the new green features. It simplifies the idea of sustainability to make it understandable and interesting to customers of all ages.

With such forward-thinking and responsible franchisees, the company and customers are benefiting from greater environmental awareness and they all appear to be lovin’ it.
