Franchising Can Be Lucrative For Local Business

Maryland’s Prince George's County recently hosted a seminar featuring the expertise of franchisers, legal advisers, the International Franchise Association, area developers and financing representatives. reports that the seminar was intended to provide current and aspiring business owners with knowledge and opportunities about the world of franchising within the county.

"We have the potential for some great concepts in Prince George's and we hope to franchise them," said Charlotte Ducksworth, director of the Prince George's County Economic Development Corp.'s Small Business Initiative. She also emphasized the value in franchisees as contributors to the county's small-business community and economic development.

One of the developers on the panel, Michael Isen of the NAI Michaels Cos., advised franchisees not to shy away from franchises requiring a larger and more expensive area since developers are actively looking to fill those spaces and can offer franchisees great deals. He also told attendees that there is less risk with a franchise than starting one's own business because they are already branded and have established a reputation.

A legal adviser on the panel, Kendal Tyre of Nixon Peabody, urged prospective franchisees to properly research a franchise before signing on. He advised them to learn about available assistance, noncompetitive agreements, past franchisees and any past legal entanglements. In addition, he encouraged people to ask about franchise incentives for women- and minority-owned businesses.

Overall, the seminar provided a forum for current and prospective franchisees to learn about every facet of franchising directly from the experts. Hopefully, their wisdom will stimulate the ambition of attendees and drive business development for the county.
